Support the legal profession in Pakistan
We, the undersigned, believe:
- The arbitrary arrest of lawyers undermines the independence of the legal profession.
- Requiring that judges pledge to uphold the emergency measures or face removal from office or even arrest, violates their independence.
- The rule of law is imperilled when safeguards are removed and when the fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Constitution are suspended.
- The Pakistani authorities should re-instate the Constitution, lift all restrictions on the judiciary, release the lawyers and judges arbitrarily detained, and allow lawyers to exercise their freedom of expression and assembly.
