World Bank launches Doing Business 2010 survey: results show a record in business regulation reform

The World Bank has launched its Doing Business 2010 report which reveals that governments have set a new record in regulation reform to improve the ease of doing business. Reformers focused on making it easier to start and operate a business, strengthening property rights and improving the efficiency of commercial dispute resolution and bankruptcy procedures.

Between June 2008 and May 2009, 287 reforms were recorded in 131 economies, 20 per cent more than the year before.

Law firms from around the world provided detailed information about the regulatory environment in their jurisdiction, to enable analysis of the type of regulation most favourable to economic growth. Contributors completed short surveys based on their area of practice and jurisdiction. The sectors covered included: corporate, employment, commercial litigation, bankruptcy and real estate law.

The Law Society was a global contributor to the report and is proud to be associated with Doing Business 2010 as it highlights the importance of effective regulation and the rule of law to a stable and successful economy.
