IBA conference: Society strengthens international reach

IBAThe Law Society delegation to this year's IBA conference was a great success with members benefiting from a host of networking opportunities. It also provided an opportunity to promote the work of the International Division, with many new corporate and individual members signing up.

About the 2008 conference

The 2008 IBA annual conference in Buenos Aires saw a record 4300 lawyers from around the world gather for a week of conference sessions and networking opportunities.

The Law Society took a delegation of solicitors to the event in partnership with UK Trade and Investment to promote English legal services and opportunities for our members.

Members of the group benefited from add-on activities during the conference including a briefing with the British Embassy, meetings with local Argentine law firms and the use of the Law Society's stand for meetings.

Paul Marmor, from Sherrards Solicitors, said:

'it was a great help being part of the delegation in terms of the mutual support of the group... as well as the various activities and opportunities lined up for us.'

Law Society president Paul Marsh and chief executive Des Hudson spoke at sessions on topics including anti-money laundering, gender equality in the legal profession and trans-border practice.

Join the International Division

The Law Society used the event to promote its International Division. With membership open to both firms and individual lawyers, it attracted interest from the global audience with many new corporate and individual members signing up.
