Law Society calls for reinstatement of Pakistan's judges

The Law Society of England and Wales has repeated its declaration of support for lawyers and judges in Pakistan who are demanding the return of judges sacked by President Musharraf.

Pakistan's lawyers are embarking on a 'long march' to demand the reinstatement of the country's senior judges. The dismissal of the judges by President Musharraf in November, which was accompanied by a declaration of martial law and the suspension of key constitutional rights, has not yet been reversed by the newly elected government. The lawyers are meeting to begin their march in the city of Multan, where they have been joined by deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudry. They will gradually make their way to Islamabad.

Andrew Holroyd, Law Society President said, 'The rule of law, protected by an independent judiciary and an active legal profession, is a fundamental part of any democratic society. We in England and Wales stand strongly behind Pakistan's lawyers as they strive to support human rights and uphold the rule of law in their country.'
