Malaysia update: possibility of new licences for foreign law firms with Islamic finance expertise

The Prime Minister of Malaysia has just announced that up to five foreign law firms with expertise in Islamic finance may be granted licences to practise in Malaysia. According to one media report, "successful law firms will be determined based on credentials and their business plans in respect of offices to be set up in Malaysia".

South Korea to allow foreign firms to operate

South Korea's National Assembly passed enabling legislation on 2nd March that will allow EU law firms to establish offices in the country once the EU has concluded its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with South Korea.

Singapore legal market opened to UK firms

The Law Society has welcomed the government of Singapore’s decision to award four of its six Qualifying Foreign Law Practice (QFLP) licenses to UK firms.

Law Society joins LAWASIA

A Law Society delegation attended LAWASIA's recent conference in Kuala Lumpur to sponsor a programme on PFI/PPP work by law firms to showcase UK expertise, and to explore opportunities for co-operation with bars in the Asia/Pacific region. The visit marked the Society's recent membership of LAWASIA.
